About Us
What is the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association?
-
First and foremost, NMSSA is a New Mexico
based organization supporting and working for the gun owners
of our state. Members come from all areas and backgrounds. If you own
a firearm or support the responsible ownership of firearms, you should
belong to NMSSA.
-
NMSSA is the state affiliate of the National
Rifle Association. When NRA works in New Mexico, they work with NMSSA.
-
NMSSA protects our constitutional firearms
rights, promotes marksmanship and all shooting sports, promotes the
conservation and wise use of New Mexico wildlife resources, and
strives to create public sentiment supporting the individual possession of
firearms by law-abiding citizens.
-
NMSSA is the voice and organization for
those NM shooters without a local club. This becomes more important
as shooting ranges are forced to close.
What does the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association do?
-
NMSSA provides a unified voice for legislative
issues including concealed carry, shooting range protection,
and pre-emption of anti-gun legislation.
-
NMSSA keeps legislators informed concerning
firearms and hunting legislation by providing factual and
logical information for pro-gun and pro-hunting positions. Members are
also kept informed on what their legislators are up to.
-
In election years NMSSA and NRA rate local
state and local candidates on firearms issues, and the results
are published in NRA and NMSSA publications.
-
NMSSA is affiliated with the Civilian
Marksmanship Program (CMP), which supports the national
need for a core of trained citizen marksmen. CMP also extensively sponsors
junior marksmanship programs and other training classes.
-
NMSSA members may purchase surplus
military and match firearms from the CMP.
-
NMSSA sponsors formal firearms training
at all levels. Several programs have been developed
especially for women. Youth training includes both gun safety training for
children via the Eddie Eagle Program, classes and competitions
for older youths.
-
NMSSA is also coordinating with
NRA instructors on NM Concealed Carry training classes.
-
NMSSA promotes formal and informal shooting
enjoyment through statewide competitions and regional fun shoots.
Active shooters are involved shooters!
-
NMSSA coordinates with conservation organizations
on issues of interest to NM shooters and hunters.
-
NMSSA publishes a bi-monthly newsletter
that keeps members informed on firearms issues in New Mexico;
including state legislation and politics, shooting match schedules
and results, gun shows, club news, training classes, and other items
of interest.
